Hyderabad:

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav took a special flight to Hyderabad to meet Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao today. On the face of it, it was a lunch meeting. But the timing was crucial – a day after Rahul Gandhi’s declaration that the Congress will not ally with any party close to the state’s ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi and the crisis in the Opposition over the events in Maharashtra.

BRS sources insisted that Mr Yadav’s visit to Hyderabad shows that the Opposition parties realise the importance of KCR and the BRS in their attempt to take on the BJP.

Interestingly, Mr Yadav said on his way to Pragathi Bhavan that they have to find ways to dislodge the BJP government and this was an effort to work towards it. The BRS working president, KT Rama Rao, however, recently said their effort cannot be to dislodge any party but should be on issues. He also equated the Congress and the BJP, saying both need to go.

Calling Rahul Gandhi a “paper tiger” and one who does not understand local politics, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC and Chief Minister KCR’s daughter K Kavitha on Saturday continued her attack against the former Congress president as the countdown begins for the Telangana Assembly polls. She also asked the Wayanad MP to reflect on his public statements after Gandhi accused the Telangana government of corruption at a poll rally earlier this week.

“Rahul Gandhi is not a ‘Babbar Sher’; he is a paper tiger. Because whatever anybody writes and gives it to him, that is the only thing he will read and go away with. He does not understand the local situation, he does not understand local politics, and he does not respect or understand the local traditions or culture of this region,” She told ANI on Saturday.

The announcement on June 26 that former minister Jupally Krishna Rao, ex-MP Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy and 30 other leaders were deserting the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) for the Congress in Telangana has given a boost to the grand old party ahead of assembly elections due by the year-end.

After back-to-back meetings between president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and other senior party leaders in New Delhi, Rahul welcomed the BRS defectors, led by Srinivasa Reddy, at a large rally in Khammam on July 2. Krishsna Rao and others are to be welcomed formally at another rally in Mahbubnagar later. At the Khammam rally, Rahul mocked the BRS as “BJP Rishtedaar Samithi” and claimed that a Congress win in the Telangana assembly election was a certainty. “The resounding victory of the Congress in Karnataka was propelled by poor people, farmers, labourers, youth, Dalits and minorities vexed with misrule there. The same thing is bound to happen here,” Rahul said. He promised to provide Rs 4,000

The Jana Sena is contesting the Telangana election on November 30 in alliance with the BJP. The Jana Sena had begun negotiations putting out a list of 32 seats where it wanted to field candidates. While the final number of seats where actor-politician Pawan Kalyan’s party will contest has not been finalised yet – the number hovering between 6 and 9 – it is significant that the party has chosen to test its electoral strength in Telangana.

The larger question is why is the BJP so keen to enlist the Jana Sena in Telangana? After all, it is a political party with interests in Andhra Pradesh and nil presence in Telangana. More so, when Jana Sena’s friendly party in Andhra Pradesh, the Telugu Desam opted out of the contest in Telangana.

With the Telangana Assembly Election 2023 less than a month away, political parties are busy forming new allies, while calling off the older ones at the same time. The election is likely to be a contest between the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Here’s what all the political parties are up to in the poll-bound state:

1. Support for Congress: The Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) party has extended its “unconditional support to the Congress” in the upcoming state assembly elections, the Congress was quoted by ANI as saying.

Besides, the president of YSR Telangana Party, YS Sharmila Reddy, also said on Friday, November 3, that her party will support the Congress in the Telangana Assembly election. “The YSRTP will not contest this election,” she was quoted by ANI as saying.

In the 2018 Telangana polls, the Congress had announced a pre-poll alliance of four parties. The Congress-led People’s Front (Praja Kutami) included the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS).

2. The Telangana unit of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) decided not to contest the November 30 assembly polls. TDP sources cited the recent arrest of party chief N Chandrababu Naidu as the reason for their absence. The TDP is yet to voice its support for any other party in the fray.

3. The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI(M)) called off its proposed alliance with the Congress on November 2 and announced a list of 17 constituencies it will contest from in the November 30 Telangana Assembly elections, the News Minute reported on Thursday.

The report added that the decision to call off the alliance with the Congress came after the latter failed to give the CPI(M) two seats out of a list of five that it had suggested.

4. Amid this, CPI(M) leaders were quoted by the News Minute as saying that if the Communist Party of India (CPI) is willing, they will contest the polls together.

5. The BJP and the Jana Sena Party (JSP) are hoping to forge an alliance. The two parties reportedly initiated seat-sharing talks in October. The India Express reported on October 27 that actor-turned-politician K Pawan Kalyan, who heads the JSP, had also met Union Home Minister Amit Shah earlier.
