Hyderabad: Adilabad BJP MP G Nagesh accused the State government of trying to hush up the alleged sexual assault and attempt to murder of a 45-year-old tribal woman by a man from another community in Jainoor town on August 31. He also accused the government of trying to give communal colour to the incident and create tension among communities. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Nagesh alleged that the State government was trying to create an impression that no such incident took place and that the opposition were trying to communalise the issue. The incident took place on August 31 and the FIR was registered on September 3, only after after the tribal organisation staged a protest, this an indication that the government was trying to dilute the case, he alleged. Coming down heavily on Panchayat Raj Minister Danasari Anasuya, the BJP MP alleged that the minister was trying to mislead people by claiming that the family members of the victim had told her that nothing had happened to her. “Victims family members have refuted the minister’s claims and told BJP Mahila Morcha chief that she was attacked by the auto driver. Government is trying to buy her silence by offering financial help,” he alleged. He demanded that the government immediately withdraw cases filed against tribal during the protest march in Jainoor town and asked the authorities to take stringent action against the accused.

Winder: A 14-year-old student opened fire at a Georgia high school and killed four people on Wednesday, authorities said, sending students scrambling for shelter in their classrooms — and eventually to the football stadium — as officers swarmed the campus and parents raced to find out if their children were safe. The dead were identified as two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School in Winder, about an hour’s drive from Atlanta. At least nine other people — eight students and one teacher — were taken to hospitals with injuries. The words “hard lockdown” appeared on a screen in junior Layla Ferrell’s health class and lights began flashing. She and her frightened classmates piled desks and chairs in front of the door to create a barricade, she recalled.

Hyderabad: As Ganesh Chaturthi approaches this Saturday, Hyderabad is bustling with festive energy. Streets are alive with the vibrant parade of Ganesha idols in various colours and sizes, from small clay idols to grand figures featuring the Lord seated on animals like cows and lions, making their way to elaborate pandals. In Khairatabad, preparations are underway to unveil the tallest Ganesha idol in its history, standing at an impressive 70 feet, marking 70 years of the festival’s tradition. Meanwhile, markets are buzzing with activity, as vendors anticipate a flourishing season, mirroring the city’s lively festive mood. In response to increasing environmental awareness, numerous households are choosing smaller Ganesh idols made from clay and natural colours. Local artisans are seeing a rise in demand for these sustainable alternatives, with idols made from cow dung also gaining traction. Several pandals are also embracing clay idols, while some artisans are using herbal paints to help prevent water pollution during the immersion process. To further encourage the use of eco-friendly idols, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is distributing 3.10 lakh clay Ganeshas free of cost. The Telangana Pollution Control Board and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority are also providing 1 lakh clay idols each across the city.

Hyderabad: Floods in Telangana have caused significant disruptions and dislocation, with preliminary estimates indicating that the irrigation department has suffered losses between Rs 300 crore to Rs 350 crore. The full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed comprehensively. Two crucial pump houses of irrigation projects were severely affected. The Vattemvagu pump house under the Palamuru Ranga Reddy Lift Irrigation Scheme (PRLIS) saw four installed pumping units and one unit under installation submerged. These pump houses, each with a capacity of 145 MW, are considerably larger than the Bahubali pumps used in the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme. The dewatering process is expected to take over a month, with the entire surge pool and tunnel filled with flood runoff from nearby tanks. Fortunately, the power substation and other infrastructure at a higher elevation were spared from flood damage. In a related incident, the Bhakta Ramadasu Lift Irrigation Scheme (BRLIS) pump house in Khammam district also suffered extensive damage as flood waters entered the facility. This scheme, that was part of the first irrigation project completed during the BRS regime, serves an ayacut of 59,000 acres in the tail-end of the SRSP Stage II in Palair constituency. Officials are still assessing the damage to the two pumping units, which have a combined yield of 600 cusecs. The pump house, set up in a record 11 months and commissioned in February 2017, will require repairs and restoration estimated to cost around ten percent of its original cost. Additionally, the Nagarjuna Sagar left canal developed breaches at three locations in Zones I and II due to the floods. Water releases to the canal have been halted to facilitate urgent repairs. These breaches are attributed to prolonged periods of non-use, with the canal network experiencing significant vegetation growth, weakening the structure and obstructing water flow. Officials warn that more breaches could occur once water is released at full capacity of 11,000 cusecs. The canal systems of SRSP and KLIS, which too had no water flows during the last Rabi season, may face similar issues. In total, 200 tanks developed breaches due to the recent floods, necessitating substantial expenditure for restoration and the number may rise once the enumeration was completed. Authorities are preparing estimates to address these breaches within a fortnight, emphasizing the need for regular maintenance and use of irrigation infrastructure to prevent such occurrences in the future.
